Craft Kitchen Closing :( & 3/50 Project

This is a sad post about another small independent store closing. The Craft Kitchen in Santa Ana opened a year ago by Nicole of Random Nicole, who is also one of the founders of the Patchwork Festival. They will be closing shop next month. The Craft Kitchen was the go to place for unique handmade gifts, clothing and art. They also hosted craft classes including everything from screen printing to knitting. We are so sad to see her go, but it's not too late to stop in and get the goods while they're still there. Below is the closing info. Please stop in if you can.

It's a tough economy, but if we all try to get the things we need from our independent neighborhood retailers we keep $$ in our communities. Check out the 3/50 Project, a simple way to really do something to help get our economy and communities get back on track.

What's happening at The Kids...

It's been awhile since I've posted anything. Time flies. Well we just had our DIY Leather Cuff workshop last night. It was so much fun. I even made sangria for the first time. A little crafting, a little sangria on a summer night. Kim guided us and we all left with really cute leather cuffs. I'm wearing mine right now. Of course I forgot to take pictures (maybe too much sangria). I think Kim got some, so I'll post them soon. If you missed out last night unfortunately we are taking a break on the workshops in August.

Hopefully by September I'll be able to post a full schedule of workshop for Fall 09. We may be bringing some back from spring. All the workshops will have a focus on great gift ideas for the holidays. This holiday is going to be pretty rough for lots of us, so why not start making some cute unique gifts this fall.

This weekend Broadway is having a Sizzlin' Summer Block Party. Lots of our neighbors will have refreshments & great shopping deals. The Kids... will have lemonade and cookies plus great deals.

20% off sales $75 or more of Full Price Merch.
Sale merchandise will be 30%-75% off
$20-$50 Rack
Saturday & Sunday Only!
Also don't forget to check out theOutfit:Handmade for Kids.

Hope to see you this weekend! ;)

Barbie is coming!!

Barbie is coming to Broadway! Yes, that's right. Barbie will be making an appearance on Broadway this Sunday, June 14th. I personally am excited to see what Barbie looks like in 2009. So if you're needing something to do this Sunday come on down and check out Barbie, meet some of the designers of Barbie at Spa Sidney and maybe get a Barbie makeover while you're there. We will be hosting a "Design Your Glamour Headband" workshop for $10, all materials included. Kreme de la Kreme will have Barbie manis & pedis. Next door to us, DDR Projects will have a group artist Barbie exhibit(can't wait to see that). Oh, and did I mention we will have pink drinks and pink cupcakes, by Pastry Chef Vanessa Alvino. Sorry to report the "Painted Wine Glasses" workshop has been cancelled on May 28th, but hopefully we'll be able to reschedule with Steph Calvert on that one.

Coming up on Wed. June 3rd artist Lisafaye Dawson will be leading an art workshop. She will be teaching us how she creates her wonderful pieces (her mixed media pieces are on display at the store right now), using handmade paper, decoupage, paint and great imagination. All materials will be provided to create your own piece of art, just bring scissors and creativity! Materials and fee is only $25! See the really bad picture I took of a sample piece.

Call the store or come in to prepay for this workshop to reserve your spot, since we have limited space. Wed, June 3rd from 6pm-9pm. (562)433-5890

We are also very excited to announce that we will be part of the "Barbie on Broadway" Party that Spa Sidney is hosting on Sunday, June 14th from 1pm-5pm. Celebration of Barbie's 5oth Anniversary! Jewelry Trunk Show this Thursday!

We are excited to host another trunk show for Anne A. Designs this Thursday! She will be introducing her new line, "Jeans Collection". This collection features beautiful necklaces, bracelets and earrings in sterling silver accented with delicately placed gems. One of my favorite pieces is the peace bracelet (pictured).

If you're still in search of that perfect Mother's Day (May 1oth) gift please join us this Thursday from 6pm-9pm. As usual we'll provide the wine, treats and great shopping.
We'd also like to thank everyone who came out on Saturday for Lisafaye Dawson's art show and the Bel Kai trunk show. Lisafaye's show is almost half sold out. If you didn't make it please stop in and check out what's left. She also does commission pieces and she's awesome. I have my choice narrowed down to two pieces. Hopefully I can make a decision before those pieces are gone as well.
Hope to see you Thursday!

Artist Reception this Saturday, May 2nd!

We are hosting a reception for local artist Lisafaye Dawson, this Saturday, May 2nd, from 5pm-8pm! Her mixed media pieces are amazing and surprisingly affordable. I have my eye on a few of her pieces. Her work will be up for the next month, so if you can't make it Saturday be sure to stop by and check out her work. Times are tough, but investing in art is always a good thing.
The Outfit will also be hosting a trunk show for Bel Kai Jewelry that same day. Beautiful designs by Whitney Hill. The Outfit will have all their handmade kids for 30% Off, and The Kids... will have selected items at 25% Off, including some of our new Spring stuff.

Busted By Bio-diesel But Still Trying

We hope everyone took time out on Wed. to celebrate Earth Day. At "The Kids..." we had 2 great workshops this month and we want to thank all those who came out. A special thanks to Kim Kessler and Steph Calvert for leading our workshops. Hopefully we can all continue doing little or big things to reuse, reduce and recycle.
A few things that my household has committed to:

No more plastic sandwich bags, only reusable storage containers.

No juice boxes, only reusable water bottles.

We purchased a Brita water filter, (the water bottles in the recycling container were getting out of control).

Replacing all the light bulbs with energy efficient lighting.

I'm working on remembering to bring my canvas bags to the market. Although I do reuse all the paper bags for recycling. Definitely no plastic.

Check out http://www.storyofstuff.com/. It's a 20 minute animation of the consumerist society, narrated by Anne Leonard. We could all use a little reminder about how all our consumerism effects our environment directly.

Now on a sad note my Mercedes 300E that was converted to run on veggie oil about 2 years ago has been converted back to just run on diesel. Unfortunately the conversion that we did has slowly over the past few years ruined our fuel system. We haven't completely figured out if it has to do with the year of our car (1998) or if it is that we don't know enough about the effects the veggie oil has on a diesel engine. Not to discourage anyone from getting their diesel engine converted, but definitely do a lot of research before you do. We haven't given up on the idea, but we are taking some time to figure it all out. We'll keep you posted.

Celebrating Earth Day All Month Long!

Ok so Earth Day is Wed. April 22nd! There is so much we want to do to celebrate we're going to have 2 work shops, a trunk show and 10% off all sales the 1st 2 weeks of April.

The 10% discount really has to do with the crazy tax increase that goes into effect April 1st. If you haven't heard sales tax is increasing to 9.25%! Crazy, right?! Well we figured why not give our customers 10% off April 1-15th, to help ease the pain.

That brings us to the 1st "Make & Take Workshop" in April. "Turn Your Old Tee Into A Cute Tote!" On Thurs., April 9th from 6pm-9pm, join us for this event. Kim Kessler had so much fun doing the Apron Workshop she came up with one more!
Do you have a favorite T-shirt-preferably used with maybe a stain or a tear that you just can’t throw away, but you can’t wear it either? Well that is your blank canvas for this workshop. You can cut it, sew it, twist it, and turn it. You can deconstruct it, you can reconstruct it. Recycle it, resuscitate it, refashion it, and re-invent it.
It is the perfect place to start, and Kim Kessler can help you create that perfect bag. It will be something unique (and cheap) and your old Tee will continue to be with you to fulfill many new adventures.
Cost $25. If you don't bring in a tee we will provide one for an additional $5.
Perfect workshop for all ages and requires minimum sewing. See the cute tote below!

Workshop #2 is on Earth Day, Wed. April 22nd from 5pm-9pm! "Decorate a Flowerpot and Plant Something"! This workshop will be led by amazing artist, Steph Calvert of Hearts & Laserbeams! She will provide the flowerpot, all the materials to decorate/paint your flowerpot and seedlings to plant something beautiful later. This is a great gift idea for Mother's Day coming up on May 10th! Materials and fee is just $15! All ages welcome! See 1st picture of sample flowerpots.

We will also be hosting a trunkshow for Hearts & Laserbeams new line of goodies featuring her "Underwater Critters" that same evening. Her new line features everything from blank recipe cards, pocket mirrors, coasters, notecards and more. Great gift ideas at awesome prices!

Hope to see you at one or all off our events next month! Happy Earth Month!

Hello Deer!

This little deer came to "The Kids..." just before Christmas. We love the little deer, made with love out of melted down crayons. She came with her friends, the Skate and Abe (as in Abe Lincoln). And yes, you can write with her, but who would want to use her up. These little treasures are created by Tamara Zielinski of the Long Beach Craft Mafia. Rumour is that Tamara is working on more amazing crayon creations. We'll keep you posted!

We are also very excited to announce our first in-store workshop with jewelry designer Wendi Grant. She will be joining us on Thurs., Feb. 5th from 6pm-9pm for our "Sip & Shop on Broadway". She'll bring all necessary items to create very cute feather hair accessories for a fee of $25 (including all materials). Make and take home a beautiful head band or clip. Just in time to accessorize your Valentine's Day outfit. Of course the wine and treats will be flowing as well.

Hope to see you there.

Handmade Childrens Clothing and Toys May Be Outlawed Soon!

Starting Feb. 10th it will be against the law to sell any childrens clothing, toys and goods not tested according to a law passed in August 2008. This will really affect all the small businesses and companies (like us) making and selling handmade goods. Most of us can't afford to pay for the testing required, which could cost thousands of dollars. If found guilty of selling untested goods we face fines and possibly jail time as retailers and manufacturers. Please read the links below for more info regarding this.

http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/01/handmade-toys-clothing-threatened-extinction-under-consumer-product-safety-improvement-act.php

If you want to join us in trying to stop this craziness from going forward please write to your local Congress person and or Senator. The 2nd link can get you to your local politician and I believe they have sample letters you can use.

If the CPSIA goes forward as planned this will definitely change what we carry at "The Kids Are Alright". It could also mean the end for theOutfit which has specialized in finding amazing unique, safe and just all around cute handmade goods for kids and babies over the past year. Please help us in stopping this from going through. We have until January 30, 2009 to submit letters and contact our politician regarding this matter. The last thing our economy needs is for more people to lose their jobs and or businesses.

HELP SAVE HANDMADE!!

HAPPY 2009!!!

2008 is over! It has been quite a year for us here at The Kids...! We are definitely ready for a new year!
In 2008 we sadly had to close our Echo Park store with every intention to reopen before 2008 ended, but unfortunately that was not in the stars for us. Hopefully 2009/2010 will bring us a new location in LA.
We did get to host lots of fun events, including art shows, and trunk shows at our Long Beach location. We look forward to doing more community events and workshops in 2009.
2008 also brought theOutfit to The Kids Are Alright. Thanks to Angie and theOutfit we now have an amazing handmade kids & baby store in our store. Look for lots of new goods and events with theOutfit as well in 2009!
Stay tuned, 2009 is going to be awesome!! Remember shop and support your local businesses as much as you can!
Thank you to everyone that has supported and encouraged us to keep going! We wouldn't be here without you!
